Warm Flower Room Slow Hours: A Nostalgic and Elegant Residence

Renovation of an Old Single-Story Residence by Tang Cheng-Wen

The Warm Flower Room Slow Hours, a design project by Tang Cheng-Wen, is a unique renovation of an old single-story residence that reflects the owner's elegant and nostalgic personality. The design, inspired by the owner's love for vintage objects, cooking, and floriculture, creates a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The project, completed in June 2020 in Taipei City, Taiwan, transformed the original three-room residence into a two-room space, cleverly reducing the unused corridor and expanding the public area. The lounge near the window was partially receded using varying flooring materials, iron, and glass folding doors to clearly delineate the spaces. This strategic use of materials and space planning has resulted in a residence that is both practical and visually appealing.

The use of different materials and techniques is a key feature of this design. The main wall in the lounge and the end view wall in the dining area were completed using a trowel, presenting a unique facet texture and pattern. The harmonious conversation between the carpet-like herringbone flooring and the peripheral matte tiles further enhances the space, bringing out a lasting sentiment of the times.

The design also takes into account the owner's lifestyle and needs. The spacious foyer offers a magnificent flow of lights and shadows upon entrance, creating a welcoming home sense of belonging and relaxation. The public domain, which includes the lounge, the sunbathing flower garden, the dining room, and the kitchen with a central island, is planned as an open settlement. This allows for multiple depths of fields and supports each other mutually in the aspect of functions, creating a diversification of interactive fun.

One of the challenges faced during the design process was the construction of the brownish-red longitudinal kitchen island, which comes with functional features such as a sink and a water dispenser. The flooring was raised to avoid excessively long pipelines and the location of the island was meticulously calculated beforehand. The back of the island also applied height differences to the structure to create a practical display shelf and a complete end view wall.

This design project, which avoids complicated stacking for the ceiling, the flooring, and the walls, focuses on depicting the user’s personality and the implementation of emotions. It was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.
